A Distinct Identity

Family Leadership Center knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives. We realized that by working together we could overcome our challenges much more efficiently, and that is why we ultimately decided to launch Family Leadership Center.

Parent Leadership Training

YOU KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY’S CHALLENGES BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE.

PLTI is open to anyone who cares about the well-being of children. Over the course of 20 weeks, you'll learn to become an effective advocate for children and a change agent for your community. You'll also complete a community project of your design to put your new skills into action!
Examples of community projects completed by other PLTI Classes include:

  • “ParentNET: School Navigation & Parenting Skills”

  • "Beyond the Step" Parenting classes for blended families.

  • “Empowering Parents Through Community Engagement”

  • “Children of Incarcerated Parents: Helping Them To Heal”

  • “Financial Literacy for High School Students

The Children’s Leadership Training Institute is offered to the children of PLTI participants, which teaches the same civic skills in an age appropriate way. We will offer CLTI in 2023
Former CLTI classes also completed in a group project of their own, titled "Supporting Essential Workers in Our Community."

PLTI teaches you how to identify problems affecting children - in schools, communities, and in local and state governments - and work toward solutions.

PLTI allows you to explore your own passions, strengths, and ideas while developing your leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. By learning about government and the media, you'll understand how to engage with the political system to get your voice heard!

The program is designed by the American Leadership Forum, Leadership Greater Hartford, and the Connecticut Commission on Children. PLTI has been held in towns throughout Connecticut since 1993 and continues to show great success in training parents as community leaders.

Parents, children and communities benefit. Parents gain self-confidence using their skills as change-agents within communities. Children benefit when parents participate more in their lives as advocates and decision-makers. Communities benefit as parents use their tools of democracy in civic initiatives.
